The Academic Wino:

The Academic Wino is a blog dedicated to dissecting current research in enology and viticulture, and provides fascinating insights and thoughts on the current state of research related to wine.  It is my goal to review at least one peer-reviewed article per week related in some aspect to wine, while simultaneously providing entertaining forays into my own experiences with wine.  The articles reviewed will span nearly every aspect of academia: from enology and viticulture, to effects of wine consumption on personal health, to social and psychological effects, and beyond!

The French Paradox:

The French Paradox and Beyond was published in 1992 and became a best-selling book about wine and the Mediterranean lifestyle. In the 22 years since publication, there has been A LOT more research into the health benefits of wine, and more specifically the health benefits of a Mediterranean-style diet in general.

I have teamed up with the author of The French Paradox and Beyond, Lewis Perdue, to revisit this important topic and to keep you up-to-date with what’s been done the past couple decades to improve our understanding of the health effects of the Mediterranean diet, and to let you know when something new comes along to either further confirm the benefits we’ve seen in decades of research, or when something just blows the whole thing out of the water!

Science and research is constantly evolving. We are constantly learning, and continually striving for ultimate understanding. The fluidity of it all keeps us on our toes, and it is our goal to keep you all in the know so you can make the right decision for you and your family.

Stealth Epidemic:

The Stealth Epidemic project is an undertaking of two scientists — Lewis Perdue and Becca Yeamans — to help the general public reduce their personal risk from hormone disrupting chemicals – also known as Endocrine Disruptors.

To do this, Lew and Becca have created three activities that form the foundation of the Stealth Epidemic project:

  1. Consumer tactics — including the use of themselves as experimental lab rats — to show how to reduce their hormone disruptor risk.
  2. Science for the intelligent consumer to understand why they should care about hormone disruptors
  3. Original scientific research and comment.
